Statement on the occasion of the EC Progress report on the Republic of Macedonia – 2010

Today, His Excellency, Mr. Erewan Fouere, traditionally presented the EC Progress Report on the Republic of Macedonia for 2009. This Report is, above all, objective as previous reports were. It clearly underlines all positive changes we have done and objectively provides issues and areas on which we will have to pay larger attention in the future.

As a President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, I am satisfied from the chapter which refers to the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and I would like to underlined that this is a result of the work of all my colleagues regardless if they sit in the left or in the right side of the plenary hall. That is why I would like to express my appreciation to all my colleagues MPs for our achieved results.

As you are aware, the Report will be reviewed in details by the competent committees and I believe that the debate will be focused on the improvement of the remarks underlined in the report. Also on the 15th November the Progress Report will be reviewed on a plenary session.

You are all aware that this Report also provides a Recommendation for opening accession with the EU. Thus, the Commission affirms that the European principles standards and directives are part of our everyday lives and that they are implemented in our legal system. I believe in those European principles which are the basis of the European Union. That is why I expect the Council of Ministers to respect these principles and to provide the Republic of Macedonia a date on opening negotiations.  Regarding our Southern neighbour which was the reason for the blockage I sincerely hope that  the absurd which caused many problems to the citizens and to the states will be surpassed, since this is not good for the region and for its European perspectives and I believe that it is not for the European Union as a whole.
