DELEGATION FROM THE ASSEMBLY OF THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA AT THE CONFERENCE OF THE ADRIATIC GROUP

Delegation from the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, headed by Mr. Talat Xhaferi, and composed of Mr. Vele Gjorgjievski, Mr. Ohran Ibraimi, Ms. Meral Uzeiri Ferati, Mr. Safet Biševac and Ms. Ermira Mehmeti-Devaja, took part at the Conference of the Adriatic Group held on 24-25 October 2011 in Tirana, Albania. 

Mr. Leonard Demi, Chairman of the Committee on Defence of the Parliament of the Republic of Albania, opened the Conference. Ms. Josefina Topalli, President of the Albanian Parliament, Mr. Sali Berisha, Prime Minister of Albania, and Mr. Alexander Arvizu, Ambassador of the USA to Albania, welcomed the participants of the Conference.

In her address, Ms. Topalli pointed out that Albania is always prepared to contribute to the peace and security in the region. She assessed the NATO enlargement with the countries from the Western Balkans as a historical process that contributes to the peace and cooperation in the entire region.

Prime Minister Berisha expressed appreciation to all the people that help in the establishing of the Adriatic Group and in the preparation of the Adriatic Charter, signed on 2 May 2003 in Tirana. He called on integration of the entire region in the NATO alliance as soon as possible.

The American Ambassador to Albania Mr. Arvizu emphasized that the United States are committed to the region and the Adriatic Group. In his opinion the participation of the countries from the region in the ISAF missions shows that the countries have become genuine and trustworthy contributors to global peace.

In his address, Mr. Talat Xhaferi pointed out that since its independence in 1991 the Republic of Macedonia is strongly committed to integration in NATO and the EU. He also said that Macedonia is actively supporting all the regional initiatives and processes, and in this way it clearly demonstrates its political will for strong regional cooperation.
