STATEMENT OF THE PRESIDENT XHAFERI ON THE OCCASION OF SCHEDULING THE LOCAL ELECTIONS
Distinguished citizens of the Republic of Macedonia,
Distinguished journalists,
Distinguished audience,
I have ratified the Decision Scheduling the Local Elections for the Members of the Municipality Councils and the Council of the City of Skopje, Mayors of the Municipalities and Mayor of the City of Skopje. I have ratified this Decision pursuant to the legal obligation as a President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and pursuant to the timelines stipulated by the Election Code. According to the legal provisions, the Local Elections shall be held on 15 October 2017 (Sunday).
The Decision Scheduling the Elections shall be submitted to the Body Conducting the Elections, the State Election Committee of the Republic of Macedonia. I appeal to all participants in the election process, in the period before the Election Day, as well as on the very day of Elections, to behave in accordance with the Constitution and Laws, and the competent institutions to provide the overall election process and the Election Day with peaceful, fair and democratic atmosphere, as the distinguished citizens of the Republic of Macedonia deserve.
Since the election campaign starts twenty days before the Election Day, I would like to inform toy that the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia will work during that period, but Plenary Sessions shall not be scheduled. This is in direction to provide the MPs opportunity to fully dedicate themselves to the election campaign, and in the same time to avoid possibility for the Plenary Sessions to be turned into pre – election campaign.
