Positive Report for the Republic of Macedonia

The European Commission published the positive 2009 Progress Report for the Republic of Macedonia, which means that the Republic of Macedonia, after being a candidate country for four years, will open the accession negotiations for EU membership.

“The Commission recommends that negotiations for accession to the European Union should be opened with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The country has accomplished significant progress and essentially fulfilled the key priorities”, said Mr. Olli Rehn, EU Commissioner for Enlargement at today’s press conference in Brussels.

Mr. Rehn expressed the conviction that the Macedonian Government will see this as a strong impetus for final solution of the name issue with its southern neighbor Greece.

Tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., the EU Special Representative and Head of the European Commission Delegation to Macedonia, Mr. Erwan Fouere, will present the Macedonia 2009 Progress Report to the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski.
