SOUTH EASTERN EUROPE: CREATING NEW MOMENTUM

The 75th Rose-Roth Seminar on the topic “South-Eastern Europe: Creating New Momentum”, organized in cooperation of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and the NATO PA, will be held in Skopje from 19 to 21 October. This is the sixth time that the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and the NATO PA are organising a Rode-Ross seminar.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski, Ms Nicole Wyrsch, Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to the Republic of Macedonia Mr. James Pardew, former Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Operations, NATO and former US Ambassador to Bulgaria, and Mr. Marc Angel Rapporteur of the Sub-Committee on Democratic Governance and Deputy-Head of the Delegation from Luxemburg to the NATO PA, addressed the participants.

Mr. Talat Xhaferi, Head of the Delegation of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia to the NATO PA, was Moderator of the introductory session. He said that the topic of this Seminar: “Creating New Momentum” is an issue that unifies all the countries in the region, but also an issue that should not be overlooked by the other European countries that stand for prosperity, peace and stability as values which are equally important for everyone. He believes that these values should be our priority in the realization of our national policies.

He also emphasized that the peace and stability are long desired values in the region. They are the basis for the development of stable and healthy societies. “We often hear the question why we want to be part of the NATO Club, and as time passes by the answer is getting clearer, and the reason is - because we believe in the democratic values and principles which are the basis of these structures. That is why NATO and the EU today are the only alternative when it comes to our prosperity. The history of mankind has seen many systems, but the 21st century is the age of democratic systems and civilizational values. The care for the wealth of differences, of the cultural, ethnic and religious characteristics is the basis of modern world”, said Mr. Xhaferi.

The first session: “Republic of Macedonia: lessons learned in preventing conflict and building a multiethnic state” was moderated by Mr. Simon Lunn from the Geneva Center for Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF). Abdilaqim Ademi, Deputy Prime Minister for the Implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement, H. E. Ambassador Simone Filippini from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Skopje, Dimitar Bechev, Senior Policy Fellow and Head of Sofia Office, European Council on Foreign Relations, and Stevo Pendarovski, Assistant Professor in International Security, Foreign Policy and Globalization, University American College Skopje, gave their presentation during the session.
