STATEMENT OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA, MR. TRAJKO VELJANOSKI ON THE OCCASION OF THE RATIFICATION OF THE MEMORANDUM OF COOPERATION

Your Excellency, Ambassador of Great Britain, Christopher Yvon ,
Ladies and gentlemen MPs,
Distinguished guests

It is our sincere pleasure to continue the three years cooperation with our British friends, the British Embassy in Skopje and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. In the next two years we will together strengthen the capacity of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, our representative, legislative and scrutiny role

The Memorandum we have just ratified continues the cooperation and the working visits of the MPs from the Macedonian Assembly and their colleagues from the British Parliament.

We are implementing this cooperation, as many others, together, as a team. All Vice-Presidents, Coordinators of MP Groups are immediately involved in the shaping and the realization of the planned activities!

The Memorandum of Cooperation envisions many activities, such as:

  • Introduction of a Regulatory Impact Assessment
  • Strengthening the scrutiny role
  • Development of good legislative practice with public consultations

Also, the focused trainings for the parliamentary professional service will continue.

There will be a review and retrospection of what has been done in the parliament, as a result of our fruitful cooperation, which intensively started three years ago, after the Wilton Park Conference.

Also, in this direction, we have planned an activity for strengthening the role of the Assembly in the Process of European Integration.
Allow me, once again, to express my appreciation for the support we have been receiving from our British Friends and colleagues from the Parliament of Great Britain.

I expect that the implementation of the planed activities will significantly strengthen the overall parliamentary capacity.
