VISIT OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA MR. TRAJKO VELJANOSKI TO THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT

The President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski, is on a three day visit to the United Kingdom. He is heading the Delegation of the Assembly composed of the three Vice Presidents - Ms. Svetlana Jakimovska, Ms. Suzana Saliu and Mr. Jani Makraduli, and the Coordinators of the Parliamentary Groups.

During the day, the President met with Baroness D’Souza, Speaker of the House of Lords of the British Parliament.

Both sides expressed satisfaction from cooperation on parliamentary level. With the Wilton Park project, the British Parliament has influenced positively the work of the Macedonian Assembly. President Veljanoski informed Baroness D’Souza that the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia has adopted its new Rules of Procedure and the Law on the Assembly, and that the political dialogue is conducted on a regular basis through the coordination meetings held every Monday.

The European Progress Report on the Republic of Macedonia was also discussed. It was pointed out that in the last three years The EC assessed positively the progress of the country, especially regarding the work of the Assembly for which credit must be given to all the parliamentary political parties.

However, despite the noted progress, the accession of the Republic of Macedonia into NATO and the EU is blocked by Greece.

Mr. Veljanoski emphasized the importance of the decision of the International Court of Justice, which is expected to be favourable for Macedonia, before the next year’s NATO Summit in Chicago.

He also said that, as was the case in the previous year, the Republic of Macedonia and the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia will continue to work on improving the situation in all the areas noted in the European Commission Report.
