MACEDONIA SHOULD SOON CONCLUDE THE POST-MONITORING DIALOGUE

The Delegation of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and the members of the Committee on the Political System and Inter-Ethnic Relations today met with Mr. Robert Walter - Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and PACE rapporteur for post-monitoring dialogue with the Republic of Macedonia.

The Assembly Delegation to PACE was composed of Mr. Aleksandar Nikoloski - Head of Delegation, Mr. Igor Ivanovski - member, Mr. Aleksandar Spasenovski and Ms. Sonja Mirakovska - substitute members.

Welcoming the guest, Mr. Nikoloski said that Mr. Walter’s visit comes at an important time for Macedonia - the forthcoming NATO Summit in Chicago. The Macedonian parliamentarians and Mr. Walter discussed the implementation of PACE Resolution 1213 (2000) on the honouring of obligations and commitments by the Republic of Macedonia, the events after the last elections, the implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement on local level, the situation after the recent interethnic incidents, the reform of the public administration and the situation with the media.

Mr. Nikoloski informed the guest about the visit of the European Commissioner responsible for enlargement and European neighbourhood policy, Mr. Štefan Füle, and about the high-level dialogue with the European Union.

The PACE Vice-President also had a meeting with Mr. Ilija Kitanoski - Chairman of the Committee on the Political System and Inter-Ethnic Relations, Ms. Svetlana Jakimovska - Vice-President of the Assembly and Deputy Chairperson of the Committee, and with the members and deputy members of the Committee: Ms. Silvana Boneva, Mr. Anonijo Milošoski, Mr. Kenan Hasipi, Mr. Aleksandar Nikoloski, Ms. Ana Pavlova-Daneva, Ms. Vensa Bendevska, Ms. Suzana Anova, Mr. Trajčo Dimkov, Mr. Romeo Trenov, Mr. Rejhan Durmishi and Mr. Talat Xhaferi.

After hearing more about the work of the Committee, Mr. Walter said that parliament and parliamentary democracy are symbols of a democratic society. Reiterating his support for Macedonia, Mr. Walter expressed hope that the post-monitoring dialogue will be terminated in near future and that the country will join the European family.
