METING OF THE PESIDENT VELJANOSKI AND THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY GENERAL, MR. BAN KI-MOON 

The President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski, expressing his appreciation for the meeting, underlined the role of UN, as well as of the Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, in the process of solution of world issues, especially the world peace. Additionally, he briefly informed the UN Secretary General on the work, the composition and the activities of the Assembly

The President underlined that the basic goal of the Assembly, beside the adoption of the laws, is to strengthen the mechanisms of the parliamentary democracy, underlining the past three EC Progress Reports on the Republic of Macedonia, in which the Assembly is positively evaluated.

Speaking of the parliamentary cooperation, in the region and wider, the President Veljanoski underlined that it is well developed with all the countries from the region, except with our Southern neighbour, because of the well known reasons. The President Veljanoski underlined that, after the recent elections in Greece, he sent a congratulations letter to the President of the Hellenic Parliament inviting him to a meeting, providing the parliaments an opportunity to contribute in the creation of an atmosphere of trust in which the negotiations for the open issue will be easier.

The UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, expressing great appreciation for the meeting and for the opportunity to address in the Parliament, stated that the invitation of the President for a meeting with his colleague is a very constructive step . 

The UN Secretary General also underlined that he is accompanied with the special envoy, Mr. Nimetz, who will present these positive signals in Athens.

Mr. Ban Ki-moon also emphasised the Republic of Macedonia’s contribution in the overall system of the United Nations, underlining that the Republic of Macedonia should be proud since at the beginning it was recipient of assistance, and at the moment it is contributor in the peace keeping missions.
