MEETING OF THE PRESIDENT VELJANOSKI AND NATO'S ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL FOR POLITICAL AFFAIRS AND SECURITY POLICY DIRK BRENGELMANN

The President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski informed Mr. Brengelmann on the current political developments in the Republic of Macedonia and the enormous interest of the citizens for NATO membership, as well as the commitment of the institutions to achieving this strategic interest.

The President Veljanoski emphasized that despite the negative outcome in Bucharest in 2008, the Republic of Macedonia remains committed to the integration  in NATO, fulfilling all obligations as if it is a member of the Organization, carrying out the important reforms, above all for the citizens of our state.

The President Veljanoski stated that in the Republic of Macedonia some things happen with grater intensity, as a result of  pressure from the public for integration of the country into the EU and NATO as soon as possible; and because of this politicians are obliged to even grater commitment and dedication towards the prompt Euro-Atlantic integration, which would be beneficial, not only for the county ,but also for this Region and for Europe in general. 

The President Veljanoski expressed his conviction that the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Republic of Macedonia would allow closure of the everyday political and security issues on the account of our commitment towards the economic progress of the nation.

Mr. Brengelmann expressed his pleasure for the meeting with the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, expressing his understanding for the frustration that the Republic of Macedonia felt after the Summit in 2008, not receiving membership into the Alliance.

He underlined that the membership of the Republic of Macedonia in NATO would ensure the stability and the security of this Region, but also in Europe, and expressed gratitude to the overall contribution of the country in the framework of our participation in Alliance missions.

The guest expressed his pleasure from the positive movement on the political situation in the country after the last year’s events. 

The interlocutors exchanged opinions on the importance of implementing the Ohrid Framework Agreement and the process of implementation of the Law on Media.
