THE PRESIDENT OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA, MR. TRJAKO VELJANOSKI HELD A MEETING WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SLOVENIA MR. BORUT PAHOR

The President Veljanoski informed his guest on the current political situation in the Republic of Macedonia, the held local elections, the will of the people in relation to the elections, as well as the normalized situation following the occurrences from the end of last year.

The President Veljanoski introduced his guest with the commitment of the Republic of Macedonia related to the implementation of reforms in the context of the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Republic of Macedonia, as well as the willingness more to be done through the implementation of further reforms towards improving the life of citizens.

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Mr. Pahor, expressed his pleasure in relation to his visit to the Republic of Macedonia, and conveyed to the President Veljanoski regards from his Slovenian colleague, the President of the Assembly of Slovenia, Mr. Janko Veber. He also expressed his belief that this meetings contribute towards strengthening the overall relations between the two friendly countries.

The interlocutors exchanged opinions related on receiving of a date for the opening of accession negotiations between the Republic of Macedonia and European Union, the issues and the necessity of timely alignment of national legislation with the Acquis, as well as the name issue with our Southern neighbor, as an obstacle for Republic of Macedonia to open accession negotiations for EU membership. In this context the President Veljanoski underlined that you can choose your friends, but you cannot choose your neighbors. He stated that if Slovenia was a neighbor of Macedonia the dispute would not exist and if there was any existing good will then the dispute would surely be resolved and the Republic of Macedonia will become a member of the EU.

The President Pahor expressed preparedness the Republic of Slovenia to do everything in its ability to ease the integration of the Republic of Macedonia.
