IN NEW YORK PRESIDENT VELJANOSKI MET WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY MR. VUK JEREMIĆ

After yesterday’s meeting with the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban KI-moon, today the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia Mr. Trajko Veljanoski had a meeting with the President of the United Nations General Assembly - Mr. Vuk Jeremić.

During the cordial meeting they discussed various issues, focusing on the promotion of the regional cooperation and the building of good-neighbourly relations. President Veljanoski pointed out the special interest and continued contribution of the Republic of Macedonia in the building of peace and stability in the region. In this context, he emphasized the commitments of the country in the framework of our Chairmanship-in-Office of the South East European Cooperation Process (SEECP), aimed at raising the level of the regional cooperation, especially regarding the parliamentary relations and association.

Both sides agreed on the need for finalization of the activities for establishing the SEECP Parliamentary Assembly and emphasized the importance of development of the parliamentary capacities in the region, individually and jointly.

Concerning the regional issues, they shared the view that there is a need for speedy integration of all the countries from the Balkans in the European Union, as a joint perspective that would bring lasting stability and prosperity in the region.

President Veljanoski informed the President of the United Nations General Assembly about the reforms undertaken in all segments of the integration process. He also talked about the activities of the Assembly, such as the ratification of the UN conventions, the legislative agenda for harmonization with the European acquis, and the measures and reforms for addressing the effects of the global economic crisis.

The two interlocutors also agreed that the positive developments in the field of economy and attracting more substantial foreign investments in the region are one the main priorities of the Balkan countries.

The meeting with Mr. Jeremić brings to an end the activities of the President of the Assembly in New York and the United Nations. In the afternoon he travels to Washington where he will meet Congressman David Price - Chairman of the House Democracy Partnership in the US Congress, which has successful cooperation with the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia. In Washington, Mr. Veljanoski will also have a meeting with Mr. Ed Royce - Chairman of the influential House Foreign Affairs Committee.
