THE ESTABLISHING OF PARLIAMENTARY NETWORKS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO FRUITFUL COOPERATION AND ECONOMIC INTEGRATION IN THE REGION

In the framework of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy project on “the role of parliaments and governments in improving the competitiveness and economic growth of countries in the Western Balkans”, the Chairperson of the Committee on Economy of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Ms. Vladanka Avirović, took part in the promotion of the regional study: “Economic and European Perspectives of Western Balkan Countries”, held on 5 February 2013 in the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in Belgrade.

As head of the Regional Network of Parliamentary Committees for Economy and Finance of the Western Balkan countries, Ms. Avirović welcomed the participants at the promotion of the regional study. She pointed out that the project for establishing parliamentary networks in the region, especially in the Western Balkans, will contribute to increased cooperation and improved economic relations.

Special emphasis was given to the increased competitiveness and trade. Parliaments should have a prominent role in this, especially in a time of economic recession, as well as in the adoption of measures necessary for overcoming the situation. The Republic of Macedonia has already undertaken various reforms in order to find solutions for the economic crisis which will also bring the country closer to full integration in the European Union.

Mr. Nebojša Sevanović - President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ms. Aleksandra Tomić - Chairperson of the Committee on Economy of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Mr. Alex Romaniuc - Head of the Head of Europe Programmes of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, Ms. Slavica Penev - Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Economic Sciences in Belgrade, Prof. Fikret Čaušević from the Institute of Economics in Sarajevo, Ms. Milica Delević - Chairperson of the European Integration Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Mr. Vlastimir Vuković - Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Economic Sciences in Belgrade, and Mr. Aleksandar Damjanović - Chairman of the Committee on Economy, Finance and Budget of the Parliament of Montenegro, attended the promotion of the regional study.

Prof. Fikret Čaušević from the Institute of Economics in Sarajevo stressed that when it comes to reforms in the filed of economy the Republic of Macedonia has done more than the other countries in the region, pointing out the ranking in the Doing Business of the World Bank as the best indicator of the scope of reforms undertaken in the Republic of Macedonia.
